There are many winter celebrations in the ISZL calendar that have become part of our school traditions such as Festival of Lights and Santa Lucia and I think I can now safely say that The Zurich Singing Christmas Tree is definitely now one of these too. Standing in front of our Zug Voices choir and seeing fifty faces shining as they stood on a real Christmas tree singing their hearts out is the highlight of my year for sure.
I feel very privileged to work with these young singers from second grade through to fifth grade and to get the opportunity to be a part of the event conducting them in the middle of busy Zurich on a cold December night with a bustling crowd of ISZL faces and the further Swiss community. It really was a truly magical evening. The children gave two thirty minute performances singing traditional Christmas songs including Jingle Bells and Frosty the Snowman as well as more modern contemporary winter songs which they sang with energy and great spirit. Being invited into the Swiss community to perform for the very first time last year on the Christmas tree was a true success for ISZL.
Welcomed back this year, with an extended invitation for many more years going forward highlights the partnerships we are creating within the community we serve. The children were risk-takers conversing in German with the event organisers and we are building our repertoire of singing German traditional songs including Stille Nacht and Ein Lichtlein Brent (lighting the candles) displaying our commitment to integrate as much as we can within the community we live and work in. Last night marked the start of the festive season for me and as the little elves (our ISZL children) were climbing down from their places on the Christmas tree, one child beamed ‘this is the best night of my life – I feel like a superstar!’.
I hope that The Singing Christmas Tree is an experience that will leave a lasting memory with our children and will be something that they will look back on with fondest memories in years to come.
