Ysgol y Môr’s residential summer school offers students from across the world the perfect environment to research and write their IB Extended Essay and have an unforgettable adventure. The action-packed programme of marine biology fieldwork and adventure sports takes place on the Menai Strait on the beautiful North Wales coast.
This outstanding natural environment and the support from experienced IB teachers and professional marine biologists, allows students to formulate and write their essay independently, in seven days.
IB Extended Essay – Marine Biology
Marine biology is the focus for our 2016 courses. The diverse and unique habitats of the Menai Strait offer students plenty of scope to choose and research their own topic, with coastal fieldwork visits, laboratory and information resources available throughout the week. The guidance and expertise of our experienced IB teachers and professional marine biologists help students to return to school with a near complete essay.

North Wales is a world class adventure destination and students stay at Plas Menai, the internationally acclaimed outdoor centre on the Menai Strait. Throughout the week, students can refresh and reboot with some fantastic adventure sports, learning new skills with our highly experienced instructors in these watersports:
- Catamaran sailing
- Powerboat activities
(All kit and protective clothing is included in the course)
We’ll be taking a powerboat adventure tour to give students a close up experience of the amazing sea wildlife, shipwrecks, sea cliffs and natural beauty of our coastline.
Plas Menai, located on the edge of Snowdonia near the historical town of Caernarfon, is the ideal place to stay with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The centre provides easy access to our fieldstudy sites along the Strait and students enjoy all of the benefits of the centre’s modern teaching and sport facilities, dining room, accommodation, wifi and internet access throughout the week, within a safe and supervised environment. Our staff are on hand 24 hours a day to ensure the wellbeing and supervision of all of our students.
The teachers, instructors and marine scientists at Ysgol y Môr bring a wealth of enthusiasm, experience and expertise to this unique programme. Our aim is to help IB students achieve their Extended Essay in a truly inspiring coastal environment with lasting memories of an incredible adventure.
The Ysgol y Môr summer school is approximately 90 minutes from Manchester Airport and easily reached by a good road and rail network.
